For over 30 years, Mace has been shaping cities and building sustainable communities.

We are proud that our work allows us to positively impact people’s lives, but we are acutely aware of our industry's impact on the planet.

From the resources we use to the waste we generate, we are taking bold action – to transform our business activities and be at the forefront of research and development.

While our industry has taken steps to become more sustainable, what we have collectively achieved isn’t enough. We need to transform the way we build, refurbish, operate and repurpose the built environment.

As an industry leader we believe we have a responsibility to spearhead positive change, introduce best practice throughout our global networks and help lead our industry to do the right thing.

Our commitment and determination is driven by our exceptional people who constantly strive to go the extra mile, innovate, and challenge convention to find better ways of working.

Steps without footprints – our carbon reduction journey

Around 40% of man-made global carbon emissions come from the construction and operation of buildings.

Despite efforts to reduce carbon emissions gaining momentum across the world, time is running out. Our opportunity to change the course of direction is now.

For the last ten years we have invested heavily in reducing our impact on the planet but we know we need to do more. To lead the change we all need to see, we became a carbon neutral business in 2020, and since then have pledged to further reduce our carbon emissions by 10% each year, create 500 hectares of biodiversity net gain and generate £700m annual value to society. At Mace we also have the platform to have an impact 1000x greater than our own footprint – by helping our clients reduce their carbon emissions as well. So, by 2026 we will secure a pipeline of work that will save our clients 10 million tonnes of carbon.

 Our strategy for carbon reduction, 'Steps without footprints', is an internal document, designed for our employees. We want to work with our clients and supply chain to innovate and, in time, eliminate the industry's carbon footprint. Our hope is that we all collaborate to tackle climate change. In order to progress this critical issue we are making our strategy freely available.

We hope that others in the sector will use it and learn about how we’re planning to achieve this ambitious target.

Building a better future, together

No single company can tackle the built environment climate challenge alone.

That’s why, as part of our net zero carbon commitments, we’ve pledged our support to worldwide industry campaigns. We’re at our strongest when we work together and this is one fight that requires us all to pull in the same direction.

Whether it’s our Climate Pledge to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early, our commitment to the World Green Buildings Council net zero buildings commitment or our recent signing of the Race to Zero campaign, we are more determined than ever to bring about positive change in the industry.
